Synchronized swimming (used to be known as water ballet) is also one of the most popular artistic sports in the Olympics. It is a hybrid of swimming, gymnastics and dance which is done in duets, teams or combos. Exceptional breath control underwater and rhythmic precision are some of the requirements. First introduced in Canada in the 1900s, it was first demonstrated in 1952 and incorporated as a Summer Olympic sports item in 1984. Olympic and World Championships are currently not open to men, but they can take part in other competitions beyond that.
